Before Shopping Around for Your Child’s Toy
Blame this Hatchimal Reviews guide on the Rubik’s Cube craze back in 1980. No, really. That’s the year that multi-colored, twistable cube debuted and took the toy world by storm. Historians will look back on that time and ask, “What were we thinking?” They’re probably doing that now.
The Rubik’s Cube was the first toy to go viral before the term meant a thing, but it certainly wasn’t the last. The trend towards one or two viral holiday gifts dominated the last three decades. It spawned a series of workarounds, books documenting the workaround, and tips and tricks on solving that puzzle. To be honest, I couldn’t figure out the toy and gave up quite early in the process, but I was graduating High School the next year so I had more important things on my mind. They say it took a certain kind of thinking to actually solve it; evidently I didn’t have that kind of mind. Or that’s what the good folks at Mensa would like us to think, though they might look down on Rubik’s a very low brow. I’ll never know.
Each year one or two toys or games seem to dominate the holiday shopping market. No one really knows for sure which toys those are until right before Thanksgiving Day (though each year that time frame is getting earlier and earlier as marketers rush to get their product to the stores on or about Halloween). Marketers hedge their bets by promoting a few up and coming toys just so they can strike it big. They only need one to set them up for life.
Viral Toy Trends For 35 Long Years
Some of those phenoms included Cabbage Patch Kids (and its malignant stepsister the Garbage Pail Kids), Trivial Pursuit board game, Transformers action figures, Nintendo “video game”, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, everyone’s favorite purple dinosaur Barney (which caused no shortage of controversy back in the day), Beanie Babies, international hit Pokemon, and the Zhu Zhu Pets, to name a few. Yes, these marketers know us and our tastes better and better as they collect more data into their data banks.
I’d like to say, “don’t give in to their tactics, but once your kids see these products, they will be ‘must haves.'” When that happens, chock another one up for the marketers. These experts can predict and often force their products on us (they’d never tell you about those persuasion techniques though) every Christmas season. What’s the offering this year? Last year it was the Fingerlings, cute puppet monkeys that fit over your child’s fingers. Many analysts are predicting a resurgence on those cute little puppet toys. They are throwing these little toys into the mix this year but with a slight twist, Hatchimals Surprise!
So, what are these Hatchimals and why would I create an entire site reviewing them?
What is a Hatchimal and Why this Hatchimal Reviews Site?
These toys are made-up animals that come inside a plastic egg. The manufacturers want the kids to care and nurture the egg so that it will “hatch.” It’s a continuation of the Tamagotchi digital pet (they’re calling it digital friends this year) that kids took care of or it died. Anyways, when the egg cracks open, it will reveal a chubby and plush little pet that theoretically has been growing inside all this time. Each Hatchimal has to learn how to walk, talk, and play games. It will also go through five stages of its life: egg, hatching, baby, toddler, and kid. No adults. Seriously, no adult stage. On the other hand, no teen or adolescent stage either. Yeah, they probably got it right on that one. Can you just imagine a snarly-faced toy talking back, cussing your little tyke out, while knowing everything there is to know about everything? See what I mean?
If you think it reminds you of an internet “unboxing,” well, you’re not far from the truth. It was designed that way.
Spin Master, the toy’s manufacturer, states that it could take from 10-40 minutes for the plush pet to emerge. Of course, the smaller your kids are the more they’ll want to help that little creature come out. Once your child sees the whites of the toy’s eyes, the new pet will peck away until he (or she) is freed.
Unfortunately, there’s absolutely no way to know which pet or what color your pet will be. Talking about buying the proverbial “pig in a poke!”
This year, Spin Master has released Hatchimals Surprise! The twist in the mix this year is, you’re hatching twins. Will it open quicker with two pets pecking its way out? Will the pets dance or sing a duet once they get out? No, your children will just have two pets to nurture instead of one.
One of the major complaint’s about last year’s product was that sometimes the egg didn’t hatch. Well, that’s a problem. Spin Master says that it has beefed up its customer service department to address some of these issues. Of course the other concern was the cost. One of the things that Spin Master did do was create little baby toys. How ingenious.
Glittering Garden Penguala
Hatchimals Glitter are special little guys (or gals) from the one and only Glittering Garden. Who or what’s inside? That’s the EGG-citing part of it. It’s a surprise! It’s always a surprise. Each sparkling egg contains one of two Pengualas. The Glittering Garden Penguala are for kids ages 5+ and requires 2 AA batteries (included). But in order for these special little creatures to hatch, they need your help. Your child’s touch encourages the little critter to peck it’s way out of the egg. These darling creatures will give your child hours of fun and creativity. Plus, it has parrot-like features. It’ll repeat what you say in its own voice, so be careful what you say around it!
Hatchimals Glittering Garden Glitzy Bearakeets
The Glittering Garden Glitzy Bearakeets are fascinating little lovable Hatchimals with soft sparkly fur and vibrant wings! Who or what’s inside? That’s the real beauty of it. You won’t know until it hatches. It’s a complete surprise! Each egg contains 1 of 2 interactive Glitzy Bearkeets! If your child cares and loves the little egg, its eyes will light up as it makes cute sounds, telling you how it’s feeling! After you’ve played with the egg enough, you’ll begin to see its rainbow eyes. And that means it’s time to hatch.
They can’t come out of the shell on their own, but you and your child can “encourage” them to just peck their way out. Capture it with your smart phone because it’ll only happen once. Now that the toy is out, your child can help it go through three stages: baby, toddler, and kid. (Sorry, no adults are being planned at this point in time. You can even teach your toy to walk, talk, dance, and play games. When the toy is ready to enter a new stage, it’ll sing “Hatchy Birthday.” It will even repeat what you say in its own voice! Hatchimals Glittering Garden — Who Will You Hatch?
Hatchimals Glittering Garden Gleaming Burtles
Let me get this out of the way, Burtles are adorable! They have soft sparkly fur and butterfly wings! Oh, so cute. So, each glittery egg contains one of two EGG-citing Gleaming Burtles! What’s a “Burtle,” you ask? Hours and hours of pure fun is what a Burtle is. When your child loves and cuddles the egg, its eyes will light up and it’ll make cute sounds. That’s the interactive part while it’s inside the egg. After she’s played with it a bit, she’ll see its rainbow-colored eyes. And by now we all know what that means. It’s time to hatch!
These little critters cannot hatch on their own. They need touch and care before they begin pecking their way out! After they’re out of their shell, that’s when the fun begins. Your son or daughter can nurture the little critter through all three stages: Baby, Toddler, and Kid. She can teach her little pet to talk, dance, talk, mimic, and play games. Hours and hours of pure fun and games await.
Ligull Hatching Egg With a Surprise Twin
Spin Master upped their game this year. They’ve created a toy that hatches twins, hence the name “Hatchimals Surprise.” Of course they were clever with the name. Any guesses how you would pronounce ‘Ligull?’ Let’s just hope it’s not a foreshadowing of things NOT to come (think “Legal”). They’re finally in stock on shelves all around the nation, but don’t expect them to last long. This is one of two toys that will fly off the racks around about Black Friday. Avoid the fights, long lines, and despair about not getting to the store six hours before it opens, and buy one now. Your children will be happy about it, plus you’ll save yourself some serious aspirin bills if you aren’t able to locate one within a hundred miles.
For the first time ever, your child can watch as TWO toys hatch! These lovable twins are hidden inside a bespeckled egg, and they have unique personalities. (It certainly beats the days when we woke on Christmas morning and played with the inanimate Rubik’s Cube or PacMan for days on end, doesn’t it?) Use your love and care to help them hatch! Hold and play with your egg and the growing toys inside will make delightful sounds that tell you how they feel! Ahh, precious. When it’s time to hatch, you’ll see their delightful rainbow eyes!
After your first little fuzzball has pushed its way out, lift your second creature out and let the hours of fun begin. Be sure to capture it with your phone camera for posterity. Plus your children will get a great biological lesson from each hatching. It gives a “twofer” new meaning. As mentioned above, each of the twins has a unique personality! One loves to move around, while the other mimics what your child will say. She’ll have fun as she raises through all three stages: baby, toddler, and finally kid.
Spin Master is not planning on manufacturing any annoying adolescents or adults, so you don’t have to worry about them sassying back to their parents or their parents copping an attitude! (Though I can see a viral knockoff in a similar light as the Garbage Pail Kids were to Cabbage Patch Kids). These little guys will even interact with each other! Remember, they are siblings, and what do siblings do? Annoy and argue with each other! You’ll intuitively understand the attraction. They come with a full sticker sheet to decorate the room with. The real question is, will she only want one set of twins, or should you just go ahead and buy two or three on the off chance that she’ll get bored with only twins? Your call.
This is actually one of two toys that is beginning to dominate the holiday toy space. It’s not guaranteed, of course, since nothing is, but if it’s anything like 2017, offline and online retailers will be hard pressed to meet overwhelming demand. To paraphrase a Chicago mayor regarding voting, “Buy early. Buy often.” Then you won’t have to wonder if you did the right thing. Let the other crazed parents scratch, beg, fight, bicker, argue and steal like the children they are trying to find presents for.
The other thing that makes this a strong contender this year is that Spin Master heard some of the complaints of poor customer service and have put a lot of money to making sure you are satisfied with your purchase. Finally, a company that gets it. Will it be enough to bring them across the finish line this year? Who knows?
